How to Read Better (Article 5)

If you’re studying English, chances are you’ve been struggling with reading for some time now.

Learning a new language can be an extremely difficult task, but there are a few simple things you can do to help you become a better reader.

STEP 1: Choose the Right Texts

The most important thing to consider when choosing a text is to choose something that is going to challenge you and will make you read more. If you choose a text that is too easy, it is likely that you’ll just memorize it without learning how to read it.

STEP 2: Read Fast

The most common mistake people make when they start reading in English is that they don’t understand the importance of speed. When you read faster, you’re able to process information better. You are able to absorb and retain more information at once. This is a good thing, because it means that you’ll be able to understand more texts.

STEP 3: Practice

Practicing is essential for developing a skill. The more you practice, the better your reading becomes.

STEP 4: Know Your Audience

This may seem obvious, but knowing your audience is vital. When you know what your target audience likes, you can use it to your advantage. For instance, if you’re studying at a university, you’ll want to choose texts that are similar to those used in university courses. If you’re studying English on your own, you’ll want to choose texts that are easy to understand and contain interesting information.

STEP 5: Use a Good Text Editor

Using a good text editor can be a real lifesaver. It allows you to write a text and then edit it at a later time. You’ll be able to easily go back and change parts of your text if you notice that they’re not working for you.

STEP 6: Know Your Vocabulary

When you read, you’ll be able to process more information if you know how to use the right vocabulary. Make sure to use a dictionary or thesaurus when reading. You’ll be able to find words that are hard to understand and will help you improve your vocabulary.

STEP 7: Read More!

Reading is an activity that never ends. There is always more to learn and practice.

Thanks for reading!
