How to Read Better (Article 8)

I love learning new languages, but I found myself struggling with English when I started teaching online. I’m not a native speaker, and I didn’t really know what was happening in my brain when I started. I just knew that I had problems reading. Since then, I’ve been trying to learn more about reading and the differences between reading in English and other languages. Here are seven things I’ve learned over the past few years.

1. Reading Is A Skill – Not An Ability

When I first started reading in English, I thought it was something that I had or didn’t have. It turns out that reading in English is a skill. When I was younger, my parents used to read to me every day. I learned to read by listening and watching them. Reading is a skill that can be taught. If you want to learn to read in another language, you’ll need to start by reading English books and articles.

2. You Need To Read More Than Just English Books

I’m not saying you shouldn’t read anything that’s not in English, but I would recommend starting with English-language books. They’re easier to understand, and they tend to be better written. I also recommend reading English-language magazines and newspapers. These are usually easier to read than books.

3. Learning How To Read Is The First Step

As I mentioned earlier, reading in English is a skill. You can’t just learn the language and then expect to read. The same goes for other skills. Before you can learn to play guitar, you need to learn how to read music. If you want to learn to dance, you need to know how to read dance instructions.

4. You Need To Read Books That Are Easy For You To Understand

This is a difficult one because you need to figure out what your strengths and weaknesses are. If you’re a fast reader, then you should be reading books that are easy to understand. If you’re not as good at reading, you’ll probably need to start with books that are more challenging.

5. Don’t Try To Read Everything At Once

It’s a common mistake when people start reading, especially if they’ve never been exposed to the language before. You can’t just jump into reading a whole book. You need to start slowly. Read a few paragraphs, or even just one line of a paragraph. If you can’t understand it, then ask yourself why. Then read a few more lines.

6. It’s Okay If You Don’t Understand The Language

There are many English-language learners who have trouble understanding the language. This is okay. I know this sounds really strange, but you don’t need to understand every word to read. What matters is your ability to comprehend the ideas and understand what is being said. This is why reading in English is a skill – because you can learn it.

7. Don’t Forget To Read On The Side

Even if you’re reading English books, you can always read something else. It’s important to keep up with current events. You don’t need to read everything that is going on. You just need to make sure you’re keeping up with the general trends. Thanks for reading!
