Women’s History Month, or “March” as it is sometimes called, is a month-long celebration of women’s history and achievements. The celebration takes place annually in March. Women’s History Month was first celebrated in 1978. On February 28th, 1978, the National Women’s History Project was founded. The purpose of the organization is to honor and promote the contributions of American women to the progress of the nation and the world.
Since its creation in 1978, Women’s History Month has been celebrated in March each year by many organizations, government agencies, and schools. The history of Women’s History Month can be traced back to the 1970s. During this time, women were slowly gaining recognition for their significant contributions. In 1974, the U.S. Congress passed the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) that was necessary to secure the voting rights of American women. This amendment, which had been ratified in 1972, said that “Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex.” The ERA was a culmination of decades of struggle and activism.
Women’s History Month is a day to honor and celebrate women and female accomplishments, and to promote equality in education and opportunities for women in many areas. The month of March has been designated as Women’s History Month since its inception in 1979. In 1983, Congress designated March as Women’s History Month to “encourage public schools, colleges, universities, and community and historical groups to devote resources to the study and preservation of the contributions of American women to the progress of their country and the world.” Each year, Women’s History Month includes many events to promote the month-long celebration.
